Postpartum Depression and Implications for Maternal-Child Health Among Asian American Women
Start Date: 10/24/2018Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 10/24/2018End Time: 1:00 PM

Event Description:
Dr. Goyal’s research focuses on the mental health issues surrounding the birth of a baby among Asian American women. Her earlier research noted that Asian American women were at a high risk for developing postpartum depression (PPD). More recently, her research suggests stigma, shame and a lack of knowledge regarding PPD symptoms may be preventing Asian American women from reporting their symptoms and getting timely treatment. Findings have implications for clinical practice as they provide much needed information for clinicians to provide culturally-informed care and to promote optimal maternal-child well-being outcomes.

Dr. Goyal is a professor in the Valley Foundation School of Nursing and the Family Nurse Practitioner Program director. She also maintains clinical practice working as a nurse practitioner in the outpatient OB/GYN department at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

This event is part of the University Scholar Series. It is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the University Library, the Spartan Bookstore, Faculty Affairs and Graduate Studies & Research. For additional information about the University Scholar Series, please go to
