Lunch & Learn: Effective Communication for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Students
Start Date: 3/4/2020Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 3/4/2020End Time: 1:00 PM

Event Description:
According to NIDCD (National Institute of Deafness or Other Communication Disorder) about 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears.  And more than 90 percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

You may have Deaf students in your classroom and find no two Deaf students will require the same accommodation.  One may need ASL Interpreters, others may not know ASL and Depend on written text to receive visual communication.  Some students may wear hearing aids, and rely primarily on lip reading.  However, even highly skilled lip readers usually comprehend only 30-40% of what is said.  Also, lip reading students frequently miss class members' comments and have difficulty understanding instructors who cover their lips, face the chalkboard, move around, or have a mustache.  People who wear hearing aids may not hear sounds the way others do.  Hearing aids amplify all sounds and can make small noises, loud air conditioners, hissing fluorescent light fixtures, traffic noise and the like, overwhelming.  Sometimes people with hearing aids hear only jumbled and disjointed fragments and wear them only to prompt them when sound is present.

There are many ways to make communication more effective for Deaf & Hard of Hearing students in your classroom.  This workshop will provide attendees with an understanding of how to effectively communicate with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.  Facilitated by the Accessible Education Center staff.
