Event Description:
Adam Richardson: Mass Made Soul

Can mass-produced objects have soul? If so, how does it happen? In this presentation, designer and photographer Adam Richardson will try to answer these questions in order to find lessons that can be applied to contemporary design.
Richardson was born in London but has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over thirty years. He has been designing since at the age of six (inspired by his neighbor's new Renault) when he penned his first car design. Following that he did surveys (using a clipboard!~) to find out about his friends' and family's car needs, and designed cars for them based on their input. Ever since, he has sought to use design to improve people's lives and to understand how what he designs fits into a bigger context. Richardson also has photographed his entire life, with an emphasis on landscape and urban imagery. He has received his BFA in Industrial Design from the California College of the Arts, and a Master's degree in Humanities from the University of Chicago.
