Cultures in Disaster? Critical Anthropology of Local and Global Encounters (King Library)
Start Date: 9/27/2017Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 9/27/2017End Time: 1:00 PM

Event Description:
Dr. Faas's research focuses on the complex issues of cultures in disaster recovery and how cultural misunderstandings and biases exacerbate the material destruction of disasters we often think of as "natural." He will present cases of cultural problems in his research around Mt. Tungurahua. He then takes us to his latest research endeavor—investigating how culture is imagined by experts and incorporated into the policies and practices of disaster management organizations around the world.

Dr. Faas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Social Sciences.
