Ever struggled to find that perfect article to support the ideas in your paper? Research can be slow, challenging, and frustrating, but the Writing Center is partnering with Librarian Bernd Becker to help you get immediate results.
In this training, you will learn successful strategies on how to search for scholarly research articles using library resources such as the OneSearch catalog, specialized databases, and even Google Scholar. We will also demonstrate the organic research process, showing both our thought process and how to troubleshoot common mistakes live. We will wrap up by detailing all the free research support available to you both in person and online from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

Exhibition Opening: Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology

March 17 - May 22, 2026

The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins). As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. Artists Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller with designer Kathy Wang have created with an intersectional, feminist lens, a web-based repository of handmade 3D modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. Their Missing Objects Library (2023-ongoing) proposes an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Genevieve Quick’s promotional format video for her Cel Bell (2023-ongoing) project describes a speculative global telecom that allows viewers to send voicemail messages to their ancestors or future generations.

A pioneer of electronic literature, Judy Malloy in the 1980s formed her own research and development companies to acquire vendor information like an insider of the Bay Area tech community. She collected information about genetic engineering research and development to make a series of reports and products – small experimental books that combined words and images and were distributed as free handouts or by mail, documented here in the OK Genetic Engineering Briefcase (1991). Decades later, Jenny Odell created Neo Surreal (2017), a suite of prints drawn from the imagery of 1980s personal computer advertisements from BYTE magazine, which Odell encountered during a residency at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Anxious to Make invites visitor participation through Bitcoin Futures (2018), a functional ATM that dispenses crypto prophecies like a fortune-telling machine. Visitors see their reflection in the mirror of Ahna Girshick’s Bias Reflector, II (2025) entangled with the machine-learned lexicon of visual patterns that dictate perception.

Finally, Abram Stern’s new video will surface their research and emulation process of working with Tamblyn’s digital artifacts, including related archival material from Stern’s mentor Margaret Morse. The exhibition offers students and the public the opportunity to learn about key contemporary works made locally by a range of artists, several of whom, like the late critic Tamblyn, have additionally contributed to the field as writers and educators. This group show will complement several exhibitions in San José this spring that highlight the intersection of art and technology.

She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Funded by the Knight Foundation and stewarded by SJSU CADRE Media Lab and Leonardo/ISAST, invited artists work with students to reauthor works using several novel methods being developed by the archiving team. Tamblyn’s reauthored work will be available as both an emulation and a web-based version archived on New Art City, a virtual exhibition toolkit originally developed by Don Hanson, an MFA candidate in the Digital Media Art program at SJSU, during the COVID Pandemic in 2020.

This Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery presentation is part of a series of exhibitions and events planned for the 2025-2026 academic year that mark the occasion of the 40th anniversary of SJSU’s CADRE (Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education) Media Lab, the hub of Digital Media Art activity at San José State University where students, faculty, and visiting artists gather to explore the future of technology and art.

The purpose of this event is to celebrate Women’s History Month by highlighting the leadership journeys of Asian American women in government, inspire students and community members by showcasing local leaders who have broken barriers and continue to shape policy, and foster intergenerational dialogue and empower students to see themselves as future changemakers.

AI image generation models produce images from text or image inputs, and they are beginning to find applications in art and industry. In this workshop participants will have the opportunity to interact with a leading open source image generation model and to watch the process of AI image generation up close. Experience the exhibition in the DiNapoli Gallery on the 2nd floor of King Library: Discover a remarkable, overlooked moment in U.S. history when people with disabilities occupied a government building to demand their rights and won. The exhibition uncovers the stories behind a turbulent April in 1977, when people with disabilities successfully launched protests across the nation to get Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 signed into law. Section 504 made it illegal for any federally funded facilities or programs to discriminate against people with disabilities, but as of 1977, one missing signature stood in the way of the law taking effect. After a 26-day occupation of the Federal Building in San Francisco, the occupiers emerged victorious from the longest unarmed take-over of a federal building in U.S. history when the Head of Health Education and Welfare finally added his signature to the 504 regulations. This paved the way for future disability rights, including the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 on July 26, 1990. Above all, this exhibition reminds all of us that disabilities are a source of creativity and innovation, not pity or tragedy.

In this call for civic engagement through song, choirs from across the country, of all sizes, traditions, and backgrounds, will create and share their own performances as part of this commemorative event. As of Labor Day 2025, the All America Program has commitments from more than 150+ choirs for over 80+ planned performances in 2026 across 35 states and the District of Columbia.

The program includes two brand-new commissioned works by composers Dr. Brandon A. Boyd and Michael Bussewitz-Quarm. Resounding Achord is pleased to collaborate with the San José University Concert Choir for this deeply moving set of music.

Digital literacy around generative AI platform use is now becoming a necessary skill for students. Following the creation and launch of our AI Writer Toolbox, the Writing Center presents "Writing and Generative AI," a workshop for students, which will detail the basics of generative AI platforms and their potential uses in different parts of the writing process. The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins). As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. Artists Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller with designer Kathy Wang have created with an intersectional, feminist lens, a web-based repository of handmade 3D modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. Their Missing Objects Library (2023-ongoing) proposes an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Genevieve Quick’s promotional format video for her Cel Bell (2023-ongoing) project describes a speculative global telecom that allows viewers to send voicemail messages to their ancestors or future generations.

A pioneer of electronic literature, Judy Malloy in the 1980s formed her own research and development companies to acquire vendor information like an insider of the Bay Area tech community. She collected information about genetic engineering research and development to make a series of reports and products – small experimental books that combined words and images and were distributed as free handouts or by mail, documented here in the OK Genetic Engineering Briefcase (1991). Decades later, Jenny Odell created Neo Surreal (2017), a suite of prints drawn from the imagery of 1980s personal computer advertisements from BYTE magazine, which Odell encountered during a residency at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Anxious to Make invites visitor participation through Bitcoin Futures (2018), a functional ATM that dispenses crypto prophecies like a fortune-telling machine. Visitors see their reflection in the mirror of Ahna Girshick’s Bias Reflector, II (2025) entangled with the machine-learned lexicon of visual patterns that dictate perception.

Finally, Abram Stern’s new video will surface their research and emulation process of working with Tamblyn’s digital artifacts, including related archival material from Stern’s mentor Margaret Morse. The exhibition offers students and the public the opportunity to learn about key contemporary works made locally by a range of artists, several of whom, like the late critic Tamblyn, have additionally contributed to the field as writers and educators. This group show will complement several exhibitions in San José this spring that highlight the intersection of art and technology.

She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Funded by the Knight Foundation and stewarded by SJSU CADRE Media Lab and Leonardo/ISAST, invited artists work with students to reauthor works using several novel methods being developed by the archiving team. Tamblyn’s reauthored work will be available as both an emulation and a web-based version archived on New Art City, a virtual exhibition toolkit originally developed by Don Hanson, an MFA candidate in the Digital Media Art program at SJSU, during the COVID Pandemic in 2020.

This Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery presentation is part of a series of exhibitions and events planned for the 2025-2026 academic year that mark the occasion of the 40th anniversary of SJSU’s CADRE (Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education) Media Lab, the hub of Digital Media Art activity at San José State University where students, faculty, and visiting artists gather to explore the future of technology and art.

Introductions are critical aspects of a paper because their contents and quality can compel a reader to either read or pass over an academic paper and open or close a reader's mind to the contents within it. An introduction influences the way a reader will understand a paper's contents by hinting at a paper’s purpose and content, providing context for understanding the writer’s train of thought, and establishing relationships between ideas that are forthcoming. A strong introduction will pique a reader's interest and make them eager to read your paper. This workshop will offer techniques for writing and revising compelling introductions.

Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology

The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins). As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. Artists Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller with designer Kathy Wang have created with an intersectional, feminist lens, a web-based repository of handmade 3D modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. Their Missing Objects Library (2023-ongoing) proposes an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Genevieve Quick’s promotional format video for her Cel Bell (2023-ongoing) project describes a speculative global telecom that allows viewers to send voicemail messages to their ancestors or future generations.

A pioneer of electronic literature, Judy Malloy in the 1980s formed her own research and development companies to acquire vendor information like an insider of the Bay Area tech community. She collected information about genetic engineering research and development to make a series of reports and products – small experimental books that combined words and images and were distributed as free handouts or by mail, documented here in the OK Genetic Engineering Briefcase (1991). Decades later, Jenny Odell created Neo Surreal (2017), a suite of prints drawn from the imagery of 1980s personal computer advertisements from BYTE magazine, which Odell encountered during a residency at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Anxious to Make invites visitor participation through Bitcoin Futures (2018), a functional ATM that dispenses crypto prophecies like a fortune-telling machine. Visitors see their reflection in the mirror of Ahna Girshick’s Bias Reflector, II (2025) entangled with the machine-learned lexicon of visual patterns that dictate perception.

Finally, Abram Stern’s new video will surface their research and emulation process of working with Tamblyn’s digital artifacts, including related archival material from Stern’s mentor Margaret Morse. The exhibition offers students and the public the opportunity to learn about key contemporary works made locally by a range of artists, several of whom, like the late critic Tamblyn, have additionally contributed to the field as writers and educators. This group show will complement several exhibitions in San José this spring that highlight the intersection of art and technology.

She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Funded by the Knight Foundation and stewarded by SJSU CADRE Media Lab and Leonardo/ISAST, invited artists work with students to reauthor works using several novel methods being developed by the archiving team. Tamblyn’s reauthored work will be available as both an emulation and a web-based version archived on New Art City, a virtual exhibition toolkit originally developed by Don Hanson, an MFA candidate in the Digital Media Art program at SJSU, during the COVID Pandemic in 2020.

Writing is hard for all new graduate students--no one comes in already understanding how to write at a graduate level in a new discipline. Undergraduate writing is a good foundation, but it does not fully prepare you for graduate school writing, which involves a new set of skills. This workshop will give you perspectives and specific tools that can be implemented immediately to ease the learning curve as you enter a graduate-level program. (Note that this workshop is intended for early career graduate students or upper-division undergraduates intending to enter graduate school.)

However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Funded by the Knight Foundation and stewarded by SJSU CADRE Media Lab and Leonardo/ISAST, invited artists work with students to reauthor works using several novel methods being developed by the archiving team. Tamblyn’s reauthored work will be available as both an emulation and a web-based version archived on New Art City, a virtual exhibition toolkit originally developed by Don Hanson, an MFA candidate in the Digital Media Art program at SJSU, during the COVID Pandemic in 2020.

Get a front-row preview of Children's Musical Theater San Jose's upcoming spring production of Godspell. CMT Rising Star performers ages 8–14 will take the stage to share songs from this beloved musical, followed by a talkback Q&A where audience members can ask the cast about their experience, the show, what it's like to perform live theater, and how to get involved with CMT.

Godspell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is a joyful, energetic celebration of community, storytelling, and song. CMT San Jose's talented cast is bringing it to life this spring with performances from April 24 - May 3. Clear writing is presenting information so that it is easy for everyone to read and understand. Generally writing is considered clear and direct when there are identifiable subjects and verbs. This workshop will provide a step-by-step guide to untangling and revising unclear or convoluted sentences. The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins). As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

Ever struggled to find that perfect article to support the ideas in your paper? Research can be slow, challenging, and frustrating, but the Writing Center is partnering with Librarian Bernd Becker to help you get immediate results.
In this training, you will learn successful strategies on how to search for scholarly research articles using library resources such as the OneSearch catalog, specialized databases, and even Google Scholar. We will also demonstrate the organic research process, showing both our thought process and how to troubleshoot common mistakes live. We will wrap up by detailing all the free research support available to you both in person and online from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

Undergraduate writing is a good foundation, but it does not fully prepare you for graduate school writing, which involves a new set of skills. Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology

The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins). As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. Artists Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller with designer Kathy Wang have created with an intersectional, feminist lens, a web-based repository of handmade 3D modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. Their Missing Objects Library (2023-ongoing) proposes an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Genevieve Quick’s promotional format video for her Cel Bell (2023-ongoing) project describes a speculative global telecom that allows viewers to send voicemail messages to their ancestors or future generations.

A pioneer of electronic literature, Judy Malloy in the 1980s formed her own research and development companies to acquire vendor information like an insider of the Bay Area tech community. She collected information about genetic engineering research and development to make a series of reports and products – small experimental books that combined words and images and were distributed as free handouts or by mail, documented here in the OK Genetic Engineering Briefcase (1991). Decades later, Jenny Odell created Neo Surreal (2017), a suite of prints drawn from the imagery of 1980s personal computer advertisements from BYTE magazine, which Odell encountered during a residency at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Anxious to Make invites visitor participation through Bitcoin Futures (2018), a functional ATM that dispenses crypto prophecies like a fortune-telling machine. Visitors see their reflection in the mirror of Ahna Girshick’s Bias Reflector, II (2025) entangled with the machine-learned lexicon of visual patterns that dictate perception.

Finally, Abram Stern’s new video will surface their research and emulation process of working with Tamblyn’s digital artifacts, including related archival material from Stern’s mentor Margaret Morse. The exhibition offers students and the public the opportunity to learn about key contemporary works made locally by a range of artists, several of whom, like the late critic Tamblyn, have additionally contributed to the field as writers and educators. This group show will complement several exhibitions in San José this spring that highlight the intersection of art and technology.

She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Ever struggled to find that perfect article to support the ideas in your paper? Research can be slow, challenging, and frustrating, but the Writing Center is partnering with Librarian Bernd Becker to help you get immediate results.
In this training, you will learn successful strategies on how to search for scholarly research articles using library resources such as the OneSearch catalog, specialized databases, and even Google Scholar. We will also demonstrate the organic research process, showing both our thought process and how to troubleshoot common mistakes live. We will wrap up by detailing all the free research support available to you both in person and online from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology

The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins). As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. Artists Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller with designer Kathy Wang have created with an intersectional, feminist lens, a web-based repository of handmade 3D modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. Their Missing Objects Library (2023-ongoing) proposes an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Genevieve Quick’s promotional format video for her Cel Bell (2023-ongoing) project describes a speculative global telecom that allows viewers to send voicemail messages to their ancestors or future generations.

A pioneer of electronic literature, Judy Malloy in the 1980s formed her own research and development companies to acquire vendor information like an insider of the Bay Area tech community. She collected information about genetic engineering research and development to make a series of reports and products – small experimental books that combined words and images and were distributed as free handouts or by mail, documented here in the OK Genetic Engineering Briefcase (1991). Decades later, Jenny Odell created Neo Surreal (2017), a suite of prints drawn from the imagery of 1980s personal computer advertisements from BYTE magazine, which Odell encountered during a residency at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Anxious to Make invites visitor participation through Bitcoin Futures (2018), a functional ATM that dispenses crypto prophecies like a fortune-telling machine. Visitors see their reflection in the mirror of Ahna Girshick’s Bias Reflector, II (2025) entangled with the machine-learned lexicon of visual patterns that dictate perception.

Finally, Abram Stern’s new video will surface their research and emulation process of working with Tamblyn’s digital artifacts, including related archival material from Stern’s mentor Margaret Morse. The exhibition offers students and the public the opportunity to learn about key contemporary works made locally by a range of artists, several of whom, like the late critic Tamblyn, have additionally contributed to the field as writers and educators. This group show will complement several exhibitions in San José this spring that highlight the intersection of art and technology.

She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Funded by the Knight Foundation and stewarded by SJSU CADRE Media Lab and Leonardo/ISAST, invited artists work with students to reauthor works using several novel methods being developed by the archiving team. Tamblyn’s reauthored work will be available as both an emulation and a web-based version archived on New Art City, a virtual exhibition toolkit originally developed by Don Hanson, an MFA candidate in the Digital Media Art program at SJSU, during the COVID Pandemic in 2020.

This Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery presentation is part of a series of exhibitions and events planned for the 2025-2026 academic year that mark the occasion of the 40th anniversary of SJSU’s CADRE (Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education) Media Lab, the hub of Digital Media Art activity at San José State University where students, faculty, and visiting artists gather to explore the future of technology and art.

Ken Rinaldo is an internationally recognized artist known for interactive robotic and bio-art installations. His work explores hybrid ecologies between humans, machines, plants, and animals, focusing on trans-species communication, animal agency, and emergent intelligence. His installations, animations, prints, and films have been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide, including Ars Electronica, The Hermitage, Transmediale, Nuit Blanche, Kiasma Museum, V2 DEAF, Arco Arts Festival, and the Vancouver Olympics.

Rinaldo has received prestigious awards such as the Ars Electronica Award of Distinction, Vida 3.0 First Prize, and the United Nations Green Leaf Award. His work has been featured in Wired, The New York Times, CNET, BBC, CNN, and a Discovery Channel special. His projects appear in numerous books, including Art and Electronic Media and Art and Science in the Post-Biological Age. With exhibitions in over 35 countries, Rinaldo continues pushing the boundaries of art, science, and technology through innovative, cross-disciplinary installations.

Digital literacy around generative AI platform use is now becoming a necessary skill for students. Following the creation and launch of our AI Writer Toolbox, the Writing Center presents "Writing and Generative AI," a workshop for students, which will detail the basics of generative AI platforms and their potential uses in different parts of the writing process. Join us to learn if, when, and how you can use generative AI in a responsible and ethical way for your writing!

As an outgrowth of her cultural criticism, Tamblyn explored how the interactive CD-ROM format could allow her to augment her writing with found pictures and audio/video clips ranging from science fiction films, comics, computer magazines and books about robots. For this feminist, nonlinear essay, she subverted the use of Macromedia Director, associated with corporate training, to discuss the “historical exclusion of women from the technological realm. However, it also attempts to create a place for women within cyberspace by constructing a revisionist history.”

A newly reauthored version of She Loves It, She Loves It Not is the springboard for a group exhibition that explores the ways in which artists have worked with appropriation and archives associated with technology. Artists Asma Kazmi and Jill Miller with designer Kathy Wang have created with an intersectional, feminist lens, a web-based repository of handmade 3D modeled objects that span a wide range of identities, abilities, and affinities. Their Missing Objects Library (2023-ongoing) proposes an alternative to commercial, status quo storefronts that provide digital assets for game design and special effects. Genevieve Quick’s promotional format video for her Cel Bell (2023-ongoing) project describes a speculative global telecom that allows viewers to send voicemail messages to their ancestors or future generations.

A pioneer of electronic literature, Judy Malloy in the 1980s formed her own research and development companies to acquire vendor information like an insider of the Bay Area tech community. She collected information about genetic engineering research and development to make a series of reports and products – small experimental books that combined words and images and were distributed as free handouts or by mail, documented here in the OK Genetic Engineering Briefcase (1991). Decades later, Jenny Odell created Neo Surreal (2017), a suite of prints drawn from the imagery of 1980s personal computer advertisements from BYTE magazine, which Odell encountered during a residency at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. Anxious to Make invites visitor participation through Bitcoin Futures (2018), a functional ATM that dispenses crypto prophecies like a fortune-telling machine. Visitors see their reflection in the mirror of Ahna Girshick’s Bias Reflector, II (2025) entangled with the machine-learned lexicon of visual patterns that dictate perception.

Finally, Abram Stern’s new video will surface their research and emulation process of working with Tamblyn’s digital artifacts, including related archival material from Stern’s mentor Margaret Morse. The exhibition offers students and the public the opportunity to learn about key contemporary works made locally by a range of artists, several of whom, like the late critic Tamblyn, have additionally contributed to the field as writers and educators. This group show will complement several exhibitions in San José this spring that highlight the intersection of art and technology.

She Loves It, She Loves It Not: Women and Technology is the latest case study in a collaboration between Rhonda Holberton, SJSU Associate Professor, Digital Media Arts, Vanessa Chang & Alexa Bonomo (Leonardo/ISAST), Elvia Arroyo-Ramirez (UC Irvine), and Abram Stern (UC Santa Cruz). Funded by the Knight Foundation and stewarded by SJSU CADRE Media Lab and Leonardo/ISAST, invited artists work with students to reauthor works using several novel methods being developed by the archiving team. Tamblyn’s reauthored work will be available as both an emulation and a web-based version archived on New Art City, a virtual exhibition toolkit originally developed by Don Hanson, an MFA candidate in the Digital Media Art program at SJSU, during the COVID Pandemic in 2020.

This Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery presentation is part of a series of exhibitions and events planned for the 2025-2026 academic year that mark the occasion of the 40th anniversary of SJSU’s CADRE (Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education) Media Lab, the hub of Digital Media Art activity at San José State University where students, faculty, and visiting artists gather to explore the future of technology and art.

The research paper is a common type of writing in academics and in the professional world; like all genres, it has certain conventions. Readers expect a research paper to have certain parts--an abstract, an introduction, a literature review, methodology, etc.--but those parts can be unclear if you haven't written many research papers already. This workshop aims to demystify the parts of a research paper so you can recognize those parts when you see them (e.g., in academic journal articles) and so you can produce those parts yourself. (Please note that this workshop is intended for advanced/upper-division undergraduates or graduate-level students.)

Juan Omar Rodriguez (he/him) is an assistant curator at the San José Museum of Art. His recent curatorial projects include Kambui Olujimi: North Star and Beta Space: Patty Chang and David Kelley at SJMA. Juan Omar previously held curatorial positions at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, in addition to organizing several exhibitions as an independent curator. His writing has been featured in the Latinx Project at NYU's online arts publication, Intervenxions.

Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology

The Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San José State University is pleased to present Click on My Mouth: Language and Technology (March 17– May 22, 2026). Guest curated by Tanya Zimbardo, the exhibition features artworks made in the Bay Area by Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez); Ahna Girshick; Asma Kazmi, Jill Miller and Kathy Wang; Judy Malloy; Jenny Odell; Genevieve Quick; Abram Stern; and Christine Tamblyn.

“Click on my mouth” playfully intones a video image of Christine Tamblyn (1951–1998) as the virtual guide for the menu of her interactive work She Loves It, She Loves it Not: Women and Technology (1993; with Marjorie Franklin and Paul Tompkins).
