https://library.sjsu.edu/sjsu-special-collections/sjsu-special-collections-archives #sjsulibraryThis exhibit highlights intersectional community organizing of the greater San José area from 1965 to 2005 in response to American imperialism abroad and authoritarianism at home. Groups including, but not limited to, Black, Queer, Chicana/o, and Native American liberation movements, labor groups, and anti-war and nuclear disarmament movements, worked separately and together to protest against US intervention in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, and to combat police brutality, homophobia, and racism in their neighborhoods.
Through materials from collections that include the Fred Hirsch Ephemera Collection, the Ted Sahl Social Justice Collection, the Harry Meserve and Marilyn Scronce Collection, and the San José Peace and Justice Center Collection, this exhibit seeks to illuminate the tenacity and persistence of these groups in their decades of resistance to American hegemonic systems of power and oppression.
Curated by Karl Grunwald, Alena Karkanias, and Elise Mills.
