Can you tell when a book was made with AI? What clues should you trust? What happens when you get it wrong?
AI-generated books are already showing up online, in marketplaces, and in library discovery spaces, but can you actually tell when a book was made with AI? In this workshop, we’ll look at real examples, examine the clues people use to identify AI-generated books, and discuss which signals are reliable and which can be misleading. We’ll also consider what this means for authors, readers, and libraries as AI-generated publishing becomes more common. We will discuss the difference between legitimate use of generative AI, and fraudulent use, where the creator deliberately tries to hide their real identity in order to avoid accountability (and processing returns) for selling slop.
This program is part of SJSU Library’s How Can AI Be Used for Social Good? 2026-2027 series, hosted at the AI Center for Civic and Social Good in King Library.
