The Center for Literary Arts is pleased to present 2023 Lurie Professor and acclaimed author, Jean Guerrero in a reading and conversation wtih J. Michael Martinez on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at the Student Union Theater at 7PM PST. 

Jean Guerrero is a columnist at the Los Angeles Times. She is the author of Hatemonger: Stephen Miller, Donald Trump and the White Nationalist Agenda. Her first book, Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir, won a PEN Literary Award and was named one of NPR's Best Books of 2019. Her writing is featured in Vanity Fair, Politico, The Nation, Wired, the New York Times, The Washington Post, Best American Essays 2019 by Rebecca Solnit and more. She won the 2022 "Best Commentary" award from the Sacramento Press Club. While working at KPBS as an investigative border reporter, she won an Emmy, contributed to NPR, the PBS NewsHour and more. Months before Trump’s family separations captured national attention, her PBS reporting on the practice was cited by members of Congress. She started her career at the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones Newswires as a foreign correspondent in Mexico and Central America. She was named one of the California Chicano News Media Association’s most influential Latina journalists.

Longlisted for the National Book Award, winner of the National Poetry Series, and a recipient of the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, J. Michael Martinez is the author of three collections of poetry, Heredities (LSU Press), In the Garden of the Bridehouse (University of Arizona Press), and Museum of the Americas (Penguin Press).  A fourth collection of poetry , Tarta Americana, is forthcoming from Penguin Press in 2023.  A Public Voices Fellow with the OpEd Project, Martinez's poetry may be found in various publications including PBS, The Poetry Society of America’s New American Poets Series, New American Writing, and POETRY.  His writings have been anthologized in Ahsahta Press' "The Arcadia Project: North American Postmodern Pastoral,'' Rescue Press' "The New Census: 40 American Poets," and Counterpath Press' "Angels of the Americlypse: New Latin@ Writing."  An Assistant Professor of Poetry at San Jose State University, Martinez lives in California.
