About this Event

#surroundsoundThe "Playing the Library" concert at SJSU consists of a live performance of music for a mixed ensemble (flute, soprano saxophone, baritone saxophone, percussion, and violin) and electronics. It places site-specific spatial acoustics and performer/audience distribution at the foundation of the creative compositional process. Composers/faculty members Pablo Furman and Christopher Luna-Mega explore San José's general soundscapes—traffic infrastructure, hi-tech high rises, bridges, un-housed encampments, sacred spaces, and spaces of education and knowledge such as the King Libary—and project them throughout the King Library lobby and 2nd floor, where the library's users will be able to move interactively and freely across the performance area.
Performers: Ray Furuta, flute; Michael Hernandez, soprano saxophone; Aaron Lington, baritone saxophone; Pablo Furman, percussion; Catalina Barraza, violin.
Furman's and Luna-Mega's compositions are informed by research on spatial and dynamic distribution of performers throughout the King Library's 1st and 2nd floor as an alternative to a stage, as well as a moving audience, oftentimes surrounded by the performers.
This event is hosted by the School of Music, with co-hosts, SJSU King Library and SJSU College of Humanities and the Arts, and in partnership with the King Library Digital Humanities Center.
