Indian cinema has long been more than just entertainment—it has been a powerful storyteller, shaping identities, influencing values, and reflecting the evolving dynamics of Indian society. From the era of Mother India to contemporary blockbusters, films have portrayed the changing structure of families, gender roles, generational conflicts, and aspirations for social and economic mobility.

This roundtable discussion, “Reel Families, Real Change,” brings together faculty and students to explore how Indian cinema influences family structures and contributes to social and economic development. Does cinema reinforce traditional family values, or does it challenge them? How have films shaped public discourse around education, women’s empowerment, caste, migration, and modernization? Can cinema act as a catalyst for national development? Can cinema shape how we view education?

Through an engaging and thought-provoking dialogue, participants will examine cinema as both a mirror of society and a driver of change. The discussion will highlight the evolving portrayal of joint and nuclear families, the negotiation between tradition and modernity, and the role of media in shaping aspirations across generations.

Join us for an insightful roundtable conversation that bridges culture, society, and progress—where the stories on screen meet the realities of everyday life.
