Demetri Broxton: The Weight of Memory: Material, Archive, and Ancestry

Demetri Broxton is an Oakland-based mixed-media artist of Louisiana Creole and Filipino heritage whose work explores ancestry, spirituality, and cultural memory through archival photography, textiles, beadwork, and embellishment. Drawing from family archives and histories of migration, his work transforms historical photographs into richly layered portraits that honor the past while imagining expansive futures. Broxton's work is represented by Patricia Sweetow Gallery in Los Angeles and is held in the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the de Young Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, the Norton Museum of Art, and the Monterey Museum of Art. He serves as Executive Director of Root Division in San Francisco.
