The Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies presents the artists,
illustrations, and artwork created for John Steinbeck’s novels, featuring The
Grapes of Wrath and the work of Thomas Hart Benton and Lev Grigorevich
Brodaty. Artists reading a work of fiction form their conception of the
characters, not just from the author’s portrayals, but from the conditioning
influences that shaped them to make them creators in their own right. These
illustrations serve to supplement the story. More than a representation, they help
draw the reader in by giving faces to the names of the characters and
background to the times and places where the stories are set. The exhibit is open
Monday - Friday 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Saturday 1:00 p.m-5:00 p.m.
Included are works by artists Carlos Ariel Barocelli, Pierre-Alain Bertola, Marjorie Cormier, Wesley
Dennis, Ruth Gannett, Robert Heindel, Vera Jarman, Jitka Kolinska, Charles Reid, Jack Sides, and
Peggy Worthington.
