ChatGPT:  It’s the end of teaching as we know it

The College of Humanities & the Arts, Center for Faculty Development, eCampus, Writing Across the Curriculum, and the Office of the Provost invite SJSU faculty to join this discussion about these pedagogical issues as we begin to grapple with this new challenge. We welcome up to 40 participants.

“The College Essay is Dead.”  “ChatGPT is about to dump more work on everyone.” “ChatGPT . . . an expensive deal with the devil.”

Whether the newest disaster facing college professors, or an opportunity to engage students around the process of writing, we all have questions – do we need to change our assignments?  Will cheating become endemic? How will students actually learn to write? How can this type of AI embolden innovation and creativity? Our ChatGPT Town Hall will allow faculty to engage such questions over lunch, led by faculty experts in writing instruction, artificial intelligence, language acquisition, and arts.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED: https://forms.gle/yL1wJqoq1d4y5Uu66

After a brief introduction, we will break into discussion groups focused on specific topics and lead by faculty experts while we enjoy our lunch. H&A in Action is pleased to provide a swag bag from all of our sponsors, including news of upcoming workshops and discussions provided by the Center for Faculty Development and eCampus.

Discussion leaders and topics include:

  • Concerns: Tom Moriarity (Writing Across the Curriculum) & Dr. Ryan Skinnell (Writing Program)
  • Unpacking the Hype: Dr. Roxana Marachi (Teacher Education) & Dr. Lawrence Quill (Political Science)
  • Creative Possibilities: Rhonda Holberton (Digital Media Arts)
  • Language Acquisition: Dr. Jon Rawski (Computational Linguistics) & Stefan Frazier (Language Education / Acquisition)

Lunch will be provided, courtesy of the Office of the Provost. We are limited to 40 participants. Please be sure to register.

To catch up on the furor around ChatGPT in higher education before our Town Hall lunch, please join us for live-streamed QuickBites discussion with Dr. Sara West and Dr. Roxana Marachi on February 20 @ 5pm - free and open to the public with lively chat. More information is available here
